From Champagne to Penina
While Champagne is a protected name for use in the Champagne region of France, in Slovenian language, it is called, Penina, instead. The history of making sparkling wine in Gornja (= Upper) Radgona reaches back to 1848. Alojz Kleinosek, a man from Radgona, went to the home of Champagne where he learned the demanding Methode Champenoise (or Methode Classique). Two years later, he brought this art back to Radgona and started producing the Zlata (= Gold) Penina in the cellar of Radgoske Gorice. So, the first Penina was put on the market in Slovenia by the year 1852.
